Play Diary: Okami 2

I've played about 8 hours now and have just defeated my first big boss.

It did take me a while to understand how to defeat it - I tried normal combat, celestial brush, etc. Eventually a big cylinder rose out of the spider's back and Issun suggested I hit it with the brush. It took me some time to realise that I could hook the vines onto the enemy spider at almost any point during the fight - that I didn't have to wait for this big cylinder again. Not sure if that was communicated well enough.

When I get my new weapon there doesn't seem to be any way to determine if it's more powerful than my current one, which I think is also a bit of a problem.

Shortly afterwards I'm on a log racing down the river and I have to attach vines from the bank to make it stop. This mini-game was quite tedious. Purely an exercise in reflexes that felt separate from the rest of the game, overtly scripted. I could understand if it were an excuse for a training exercise immediately acquiring that ability, but it was well after you have to have mastered that ability anyway.
